Buy a pre-owned Hermès bag, jewel or watch at The Swiss Collector
Founded in Paris in 1837 by Thierry Hermès, the house of Hermès is the absolute embodiment of French luxury : discreet, artisanal and timeless. Originally a saddler to the aristocracy, Hermès progressively extended its unique craftsmanship to leather goods, jewellery and watchmaking, without ever betraying its DNA of artisanal excellence. Birkin, Kelly, Chaîne d'Ancre, Arceau: every Hermès creation is a wearable work of art. At The Swiss Collector, we offer a carefully selected range of pre-owned Hermès bags, jewels and watches : unique pieces, at advantageous prices, in the spirit of sustainable luxury.
History of Hermès : 185 Years from the Horse to Global Luxury
The Aristocracy's Saddler (1837–1880)
In 1837, Thierry Hermès set up his harness and saddlery workshop in the heart of Paris to craft the bridles, saddles and harnesses of the French and European aristocracy. The quality of his leathers and the finesse of his stitching quickly earned him a prestigious clientele : Napoleon III among his early illustrious clients. His son Charles-Émile moved the boutique to 24 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré : the legendary address that remains the house's home to this day.
The Iconic Bags: Kelly (1935) and Birkin (1984)
In the 1930s, Robert Dumas designed a small structured bag with straps and a padlock that would become the Kelly : named in 1956 when Grace Kelly used it to conceal her pregnancy from photographers. In 1984, during a Paris-London flight, Jane Birkin found herself seated next to Hermès CEO Jean-Louis Dumas. Complaining about the lack of a practical bag, she sketched her ideas on an airsickness bag. The Birkin was born from that conversation : and quickly became the world's most coveted bag.
Watchmaking and Jewellery (1928–Today)
Hermès launched its first wristwatches in 1928. In 1978, the house founded La Montre Hermès SA in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland, its dedicated watch manufacture, which designs the Arceau, Cape Cod and Heure H collections. In 1931, Robert Dumas drew inspiration from marine anchor chains to create the Chaîne d'Ancre jewellery collection, which became one of the house's most iconic jewellery lines. Today, Hermès remains an independent family company, passed from generation to generation, and one of the world's highest luxury market capitalisations.

Hermès : The Luxury Safe-Haven Asset
Hermès bags (Birkin and Kelly above all) are today recognised as one of the best safe-haven assets in the luxury market, sometimes outperforming conventional financial assets.
Organised scarcity
Obtaining a Birkin or Kelly at an Hermès boutique is extremely complex. Waiting lists extend over several years, quotas are strict. This structural scarcity mechanically fuels the secondary market, where pieces often trade above boutique price.
Regular price increases
Hermès raises its boutique prices every year, mechanically revaluing pieces already on the secondary market. A Birkin 30 in Togo now retails for approximately CHF 9,800, versus CHF 2,000 at its creation in 1984.
