Buy a pre-owned Panerai watch at The Swiss Collector

Founded in Florence in 1860 by Giovanni Panerai, the house of Officine Panerai began as a watchmaking boutique and school before becoming the official supplier to the Italian Navy for over a century. Long kept confidential, reserved exclusively for the combat swimmers of the Regia Marina, it opened to the public in 1993 and joined the Richemont group in 1997. Since then, Panerai has turned its military heritage into a defining strength: imposing cushion-shaped cases, the iconic crown-protecting bridge, sandwich dials of absolute legibility. From the legendary Radiomir to the professional-grade Submersible and the refined Luminor Due, each collection embodies a rare balance between Italian aesthetics and Swiss precision. At The Swiss Collector, our selection of pre-owned Panerai watches evolves continuously : each one unique.

The History of Panerai : 165 Years Between Florence and the Deep Sea

The Origins of a Military Supplier (1860–1993)

In 1860, Giovanni Panerai opened his Officine Panerai workshop on the Lungarno Corsini in Florence, overlooking the Arno. The boutique served simultaneously as a watch shop, school and supplier of precision instruments to the Italian Navy. In the 1930s, the Regia Marina commissioned Panerai to produce waterproof, high-legibility watches for its combat swimmers : the legendary incursori. The Radiomir was born in 1936, followed in the 1950s by the Luminor, with its patented crown-protecting bridge. These watches remained classified and strictly military for decades.

Opening to the Public and the Richemont Era (1993–2005)

In 1993, Panerai presented its first watches to the public in Basel, in very limited series. The response was immediate, fuelled in large part by Sylvester Stallone : a passionate Panerai fan who wore the brand in several films from 1996 onwards and played a decisive role in its international rise. In 1997, Panerai joined the Richemont group, gaining the resources to match its ambitions. The manufacture relocated to Neuchâtel, Switzerland, where it began developing its first in-house calibres, launched from 2005 onwards.

The In-House Calibre and Exclusive Materials Era (2005–Today)

Since 2005, Panerai has developed all its movements internally in Neuchâtel. The house also innovates in materials: Carbotech™ (carbon fibre composite), Fibratech™ (basalt fibres), Goldtech™ (highly resistant red gold alloy) and Platinumtech™ complement bronze, titanium and ceramic across the collections. In 2021, Panerai pushed its ecological commitment further with the Submersible eLAB-ID, composed of more than 98% recycled materials : a first in fine watchmaking.

Panerai vs IWC vs Bell & Ross : Which to Choose ?

Panerai

The choice for enthusiasts of military history, assertive Italian design and watches with a strong visual identity. Its imposing cases (44 to 47 mm), absolute legibility and exclusive materials make it a watch of character with an immediately recognisable DNA. Ideal for those who want a watch with a genuine story and a fully assumed aesthetic.

IWC

Shares with Panerai the world of pilot and diving watches with a strong technical heritage, but with a more diverse range in terms of case sizes and complications. A more classical positioning, with a comparable secondary market value on flagship references (Portugieser, Pilot's Watch).

Bell & Ross

Shares the military aesthetic and maximum legibility, but with a more recent heritage and a generally more accessible secondary market value. Less manufacture prestige, but an instantly identifiable design.

Our Swiss Collector Verdict

If you are looking for a watch with a unique character, an authentic military history and impeccable manufacture quality, Panerai is hard to beat. The Radiomir for history, the Luminor for iconicity, the Submersible for adventure.

Caring for a Pre-Owned Panerai Watch

Recommended Service Interval

Panerai recommends a full service every 5 years. The in-house P.900 and P.9000 calibres are recognised for their robustness and reliability, but regular maintenance remains essential to preserve water resistance (critical on diving models) and chronometric accuracy.

Signs of Good Preservation

Fully functional crown-protecting bridge with no excessive play, correctly tightened case back, leather or steel strap without deformation, sandwich dial free from moisture traces, luminescent material still active on indices and hands.
