History of Patek Philippe : 185 Years of Genevan Excellence
Origins (1839)
In 1839, Polish watchmaker Antoni Patek partnered with compatriot François Czapek to found a manufacture in Geneva. In 1844, Patek met French engineer Adrien Philippe at the Paris Exhibition, the inventor of the keyless winding crown, a revolution that made the winding key obsolete. The two men joined forces in 1851 to create Patek, Philippe & Co., soon renamed Patek Philippe & Co.
From its earliest years, the manufacture distinguished itself: in 1851, it received a commission from Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, laying the foundations of a royal reputation that has never wavered.
Great Innovations (1868–1932)
Patek Philippe punctuated watchmaking history with major breakthroughs. In 1868, it created the first wristwatch in history for the Countess Koscowicz of Hungary. In 1889, it presented the first pocket watch with a perpetual calendar and minute repeater. In 1925, it produced the first perpetual calendar on a wristwatch.
In 1932, Henri Stern acquired the struggling manufacture and began a new era, it was under his direction that the Calatrava was launched, destined to become one of the most iconic watches in history.
The Nautilus and the Sporting Revolution (1976)
In 1976, during the quartz crisis, Patek Philippe took an audacious risk : launching a high-priced sports watch in stainless steel. Designed by the legendary Gérald Genta in a single night, the Nautilus upended luxury watchmaking conventions with its porthole-shaped octagonal bezel and horizontal stripes. Initially dismissed, it is today one of the most coveted watches in the world.
Patek Philippe Today
Still owned by the Stern family, Patek Philippe produces approximately 60,000 watches per year, a deliberately limited figure to preserve exclusivity. Every calibre is entirely developed in-house. The maison is unique in guaranteeing parts availability and servicing for all its watches for decades, including vintage models. Its famous tagline perfectly captures this philosophy : "You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation."

Patek Philippe : The Ultimate Safe-Haven Asset in Watchmaking
Patek Philippe is universally recognised as the brand whose watches best retain (and grow) their value over time. Here's why :
Deliberately limited production
~60,000 watches per year, compared to approximately 1 million for Rolex. This structural scarcity, combined with constant global demand, durably underpins prices.
Constant global demand
Waiting lists for certain references in boutiques exceed several years, mechanically fuelling speculation on the secondary market.
Auction records
The Grandmaster Chime 6300A-010 sold for CHF 30,000,000 at the Only Watch 2019 sale, the absolute record for a watch at auction.
Unique service commitment
Patek guarantees servicing for all its watches, including the oldest models, and ensures parts availability for decades.
Patek Philippe vs Audemars Piguet vs Rolex : Which to Choose ?
Patek Philippe
Is the choice of collectors seeking the safest and most prestigious horological investment. Its limited production, family heritage and technical complications make it the most coveted brand at auction houses worldwide.
Audemars Piguet
Appeals more to enthusiasts of avant-garde design and iconic sports watches with the Royal Oak. Its secondary market is very active, but prices are more volatile.
Rolex
Is the choice for maximum reliability, liquidity and immediate global recognition. Ideal as a first luxury watch.
Our The Swiss Collector verdict
If your horizon is long-term investment and generational transmission, Patek Philippe has no equal. For an accessible first Patek, the Aquanaut 5167A or Calatrava 5196 are the best entry points.
