History of Piaget : 150 Years of Boldness Between Watchmaking and Jewellery
Artisanal Origins (1874–1943)
In 1874, Georges-Édouard Piaget founded a movement and blank manufacturing workshop in La Côte-aux-Fées, in the Swiss Jura. For its first decades, the manufacture focused exclusively on producing movements for other houses : never applying its own name to a dial. This discretion concealed exceptional expertise, recognised by the greatest watchmaking houses of the era. In 1943, Valentin Piaget took the helm and made a decisive pivot : Piaget would henceforth sign its own watches.
The Ultra-Thin Revolution (1950–1960)
The 1950s marked Piaget's entry into watchmaking history with a radical innovation : the ultra-thin movement. In 1957, Piaget launched the Calibre 9P, a hand-wound mechanical movement of just 2mm thickness : an absolute world record at the time. In 1960, the Calibre 12P automatic followed at only 2.3mm. These technical feats revolutionised the aesthetics of luxury watches and made Piaget the world's undisputed reference for ultra-thin watchmaking : a title it has never relinquished.
Entering Jewellery (1960–1980)
In the 1960s, brothers Yves and Gérald Piaget directed the house towards new territory : jewellery. They dared to combine their ultra-thin watches with richly decorated solid gold bracelets : sculpted, chiselled, hammered gold, inlaid with turquoise, malachite or coral. These creations, blurring the boundaries between watch and jewel, immediately seduced an international clientele of celebrities and aristocrats.
By the 1970s, Piaget had become the jeweller of the international jet-set. Its colourful and flamboyant creations (the "Palace" spirit) adorned the wrists of Grace Kelly, Liz Taylor, María Félix and countless crowned heads. The manufacture became one of the most prized suppliers on the Place Vendôme.
Piaget Today
A member of the Richemont group since 1988, Piaget perpetuates its dual watchmaking and jewellery heritage in its Plan-les-Ouates manufacture near Geneva. The house continues to set ultra-thin records with the Altiplano Ultimate Concept (2.23mm thickness in 2018) and regularly launches jewellery collections acclaimed by international critics.

Piaget : A Dual Jewellery and Watchmaking Investment
Piaget occupies a unique position in the luxury market : it is one of the rare houses to excel simultaneously in haute horlogerie and haute joaillerie, with integrated workshops mastering both disciplines.
Possession, a jewellery safe-haven
Thanks to its worldwide desirability, endless versatility and immediate recognition, the Possession collection is Piaget's most liquid piece on the secondary market. Its value is stable and in slight progression, supported by the regular price increases applied by Richemont across its brands.
Altiplano, a technical asset
Altiplano watches in precious metals are genuine horological pieces whose value reflects the weight of the metal, the complication and rarity. They appreciate slowly but steadily over the long term.
Accessible entry into haute joaillerie
Piaget offers lower entry prices than Van Cleef & Arpels or Cartier, while delivering comparable craftsmanship and heritage. A Possession ring in gold starts from around CHF 700 pre-owned on platforms such as 1stDibs, versus CHF 1,800 for a VCA Alhambra pendant : making it one of the most accessible doors into Swiss haute joaillerie.
Piaget vs Van Cleef & Arpels vs Cartier : Which to Choose ?
Piaget
Is the house of solar boldness, ultra-thin watchmaking and colourful jewellery. Its Possession is accessible and worn daily; its Altiplano watches are technical masterpieces. Ideal for those seeking both an exceptional jewel and watch without the entry price of Van Cleef or Cartier.
Van Cleef & Arpels
Leads on iconicity and secondary market liquidity of the Alhambra. Slightly more desirable for collectors, with more pronounced value appreciation.
Cartier
Is the reference for unisex jewellery and iconic watches (Tank, Santos). More versatile and more widely known among the general public.
Our The Swiss Collector verdict
If you are looking for a luminous, feminine jewel bearing authentic artisanal heritage at an accessible price, Piaget (and the Possession in particular) is an excellent entry point into the world of Swiss haute joaillerie.
