Buy a certified pre-owned Rolex watch at The Swiss Collector
Founded in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf, Rolex is the world's most recognised watch brand. Synonymous with precision, robustness and prestige, the Genevan manufacture produces approximately 1 million watches per year and yet remains one of the most difficult brands to obtain in boutique. Iconic sports models such as the Submariner, Daytona and GMT-Master systematically trade above their retail price on the secondary market. At The Swiss Collector, we offer a carefully selected range of certified pre-owned Rolex watches, giving you direct access to the most sought-after references, without waiting lists.
History of Rolex : Over 120 Years of Watchmaking Innovation
London Beginnings (1905)
Hans Wilsdorf, a young Bavarian entrepreneur based in London, founded Wilsdorf & Davis in 1905 with his brother-in-law Alfred Davis. His vision was clear from the start : to create reliable and precise wristwatches at a time when pocket watches still dominated. In 1908, he registered the name "Rolex", short, easy to pronounce in any language and elegant on a dial.
In 1910, Rolex earned the first Class A precision certificate ever awarded to a wristwatch by the Swiss Official Timing Control Bureau. In 1914, the Kew Observatory in Britain granted its Class A precision certification, a world first for a wristwatch.
Major Technical Innovations (1926–1945)
Rolex punctuated watchmaking history with groundbreaking inventions. In 1926, it invented and patented the Oyster case, the world's first waterproof and dustproof wristwatch. In 1927, to prove its robustness, Rolex equipped Mercedes Gleitze during her swim across the English Channel, the watch emerged in perfect working order. In 1931, Rolex invented the Perpetual rotor, the first self-winding mechanism with a 360° rotation, which virtually all modern automatic watches still draw upon.
The Age of Exploration (1953–1960)
The 1950s consecrated Rolex as the watch of explorers. In 1953, Edmund Hillary wore an Oyster Perpetual on the first ascent of Mount Everest. That same year, the Submariner was launched, water-resistant to 100 metres, a revolution for divers. In 1954, the GMT-Master was developed with Pan American Airways to allow pilots to read two time zones simultaneously. In 1960, a Rolex attached to the hull of the bathyscaphe Trieste withstood depths of over 10,900 metres in the Mariana Trench.
Rolex Today
Still independent and owned by the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation, Rolex employs over 9,000 people and produces approximately 1 million watches per year. Its steel sports models remain among the most difficult to obtain in boutique, fuelling a very active secondary market where many references trade well above their retail price.

Why Do Pre-owned Rolex Watches Hold Their Value So Well ?
Steel Rolex sports models (Submariner, Daytona, GMT-Master II) systematically trade above their boutique price on the secondary market. Three main reasons explain this :
Strict boutique quotas
Rolex distributes its sports references in limited quantities through its authorised dealers. Waiting lists for a Daytona or GMT "Pepsi" can exceed 2 to 5 years.
Global demand structurally exceeding supply
Even with ~1 million watches produced annually, Rolex cannot satisfy demand for its flagship references, mechanically fuelling the secondary market premium.
Regular retail price increases
Rolex raises its official prices almost every year, triggering a mechanical revaluation of watches already on the market.
Rolex & Iconic Personalities
Rolex has always maintained strong ties with top-level sport, exploration and culture :
- Roger Federer : Rolex ambassador since 2006, worn throughout most of his career
- Tiger Woods : long-standing ambassador, faithful to Rolex on the greens
- Paul Newman : his personal Daytona sold for $17.8M in 2017, the most expensive watch ever sold at auction at the time
- Sean Connery / James Bond : the Submariner worn in the first Bond films in the 1960s turned the watch into a global icon
- Edmund Hillary : wore an Oyster Perpetual on the conquest of Everest in 1953
- Sylvester Stallone : avid vintage Daytona collector, owner of extremely rare references

Our Take at The Swiss Collector
"Investing in a Rolex is always a smart move! Everyone on our team has a favourite model. We particularly recommend the Daytona 126500LN or 116503 (two-tone gold and steel), and of course, the legendary Submariner Hulk 116610LV. Rolex remains the gold standard in fine watchmaking. Even if some models might feel classic or understated, these timepieces are technically brilliant and eternally iconic."
