Buy a pre-owned TAG Heuer watch at The Swiss Collector
Founded in 1860 in Saint-Imier by Édouard Heuer, TAG Heuer is one of Switzerland's most technically driven sports watch manufacturers. The brand built its reputation on consistent innovation: the oscillating pinion patented in 1887, the first 1/100th-of-a-second mechanical chronometer in 1916, and since 2017 a fully in-house chronograph calibre. After merging with the TAG group in 1985 and joining LVMH in 1999, TAG Heuer continues to offer sport watches at one of the most accessible price points in Swiss luxury. The Monaco, Carrera, Autavia and Aquaracer collections cover a wide range, from racing chronographs to professional dive watches. At The Swiss Collector, our selection of pre-owned TAG Heuer watches is certified by our experts and updated regularly.
The History of TAG Heuer : 165 Years of Chronometric Innovation
Early Innovations (1860–1963)
Édouard Heuer opened his workshop in Saint-Imier in 1860. In 1887, the house patented the oscillating pinion, a mechanism still found in modern chronographs. In 1916, the Mikrograph became the first mechanical chronometer capable of measuring 1/100th of a second : a milestone that led to Heuer's appointment as official timekeeper of the Olympic Games from 1920.
The Sport Collections Era (1963–1985)
In 1963, Jack Heuer launched the Carrera, named after the Carrera Panamericana race. In 1969, the Monaco broke new ground as the world's first automatic square-case chronograph, powered by the Chronomatic Calibre 11. Steve McQueen wore it throughout the filming of Le Mans (1971), giving the watch lasting cultural recognition. That same year, the Autavia rounded out the range with its automotive and aviation positioning.
In-House Manufacturing and the Digital Era (1985–Today)
The 1985 merger with TAG and the 1999 entry into LVMH gave the brand the resources to develop its own movements. The Calibre Heuer 02, launched in 2017, is TAG Heuer's first fully in-house chronograph movement, with an 80-hour power reserve. In 2015, the Connected launched the Swiss luxury smartwatch segment. In 2024–2025, the Monaco Split-Seconds Chronograph and new Carrera variants confirmed the brand's continued technical direction.

TAG Heuer vs Breitling vs Omega
TAG Heuer
Accessible positioning within Swiss luxury, strong motorsport roots (F1, Monaco Grand Prix, Porsche), competitive Heuer 02 calibre. Good value on the secondary market, particularly on Monaco and Carrera references. A solid choice for a first manufacture chronograph.
Breitling
Aviation focus rather than automotive. All watches COSC-certified. The B01 calibre is well regarded for its reliability. Slightly higher price point than TAG Heuer on comparable models.
Omega
Broader range, from diving to space exploration. Generally higher secondary market value on flagship models (Speedmaster, Seamaster). More widely recognised, positioned a notch above in perceived prestige.
Our TSC view
For a sport chronograph with a documented motorsport history and an in-house calibre at a controlled budget, TAG Heuer is a reliable choice. The Monaco for the square case, the Carrera for sporting elegance, the Autavia for vintage appeal.

Servicing
TAG Heuer recommends a full service every 5 to 7 years. The Calibre Heuer 02 is reliable, but regular maintenance preserves accuracy and water resistance : particularly relevant on Aquaracer models. Check for : smooth pushers, correctly tightened crown, no excessive play in the Aquaracer bezel, no abnormal bracelet stretch.
